 5 Days of Quarantine

Having arrived in Naples on Monday, we are now on our 3rd day of isolation. Luckily for us, our apartment is so well-stocked with food, from breakfast pastries to pasta and sauces, that we have only had to do a small grocery shop. Apart from that, we have been spending our days lounging around, reading books, planning the rest of our trip, and attempting to learn some Italian. In some respects, this has been boring, with the urge to explore the streets around us being quashed by restrictions. However, it has also brought positives, giving us a chance to acclimatise to the unrelenting heat, as well as to the length of time ahead of us during which we will be wholly independent. 

Even during isolation, there have been events to keep us entertained. Last night's football, a match that oozed with tension, brought a rare silence over the city as the roads and streets were deserted. Thanks to Italy's victory, that silence was broken in style, with fireworks, shouts, and music creating an ecstatic chorus. 

We will have one more full day of quarantine before kickstarting the touristy aspects of our trip as we head to Salerno. With little official guidance about the rules for travelers exiting quarantine - the Campania COVID hotline which we were required to call offered no more than the words, 'the number you are calling is unobtainable' - we will take a test in the morning before making the 2-hour journey to the coast. For the rest of our time in Naples, life will resemble that of January in Britain, but with a good deal more sunshine!
